Wild Arms

Wild Arms is a character that appears in the film The Land Before Time XIV: Journey of the Brave. He is an eccentric member of Bron's herd.

Character[]

Appearance[]

Wild Arms is an unusual looking dinosaur, identified as (though only loosely resembling) a Nothronychus by official media. He has a beak, a yellow stomach that was somewhat similar to those of the Yellow Bellies in The Land Before Time XIII: The Wisdom of Friends, dark teal feathers behind his head, long feathers running down the length of his long, spindly arms, and a layer of protofeathers coating his back.

Personality[]

A quirky member of Bron's herd, Wild Arms is somewhat hyper and easily excitable, often flailing his long arms around when happy or scared. A social media post by Universal prior to the film's release date noted that Wild Arms "might be a little eccentric, but his heart is in the right place."[2] While cowardice is one of the character's predominant traits, it is intended to paint him as humorous rather than unlikable. He is easily frightened, especially by sharpteeth, as encountering even Chomper causes him to faint.

However, though Wild Arms is perpetually afraid as he leads Grandpa Longneck and Mr. Threehorn through the Mysterious Beyond to find Bron and the children, he grudgingly puts his fear aside and continues on his journey each time he is reminded of the possiblity that the children are in danger. This shows that despite his cowardly personality, his concerns about the safety of others can ultimately overcome his own fears.

Wild Arms often presents himself as being brave and heroic, thought this is not exactly accurate, and it appears he is aware of the inaccuracy of this image. For example, at the end of the film, Wild Arms proudly boasts to Etta that he "volunteered" to lead a rescue team to Bron and the children, when, in reality, this was not his idea and he had to be pushed past his initial reluctance to do it. Etta playfully questions the claim: "YOU volunteered? Really." In response, Wild Arms stutters awkwardly and acts sheepish. This makes it seem that Wild Arms intentionally exaggerates his heroism due to embarrassment about his true bumbling self.

It is possible that Wild Arms is considered a misfit or laughingstock among his herd. Upon arriving in the Great Valley, he introduces himself by saying, "Everybody calls me Wild Arms, though I never really figured out why!" (Upon noticing how much he was just flailing his arms around, he then realizes where the nickname came from.) This seems to reveal that the other members of Bron's herd gave Wild Arms his name based on his over-the-top antics, presumably to make fun of him.

History[]

Wild Arms' first appearance in the film is during the opening act, in which he notifies Littlefoot and the rest of the valley that Bron has been imperiled in the Mysterious Beyond. In the evening, after the kids set off to find Littlefoot's father, he is enlisted by Grandpa Longneck and Daddy Topps to guide them to the Fire Mountain, the exact location where Bron was put in danger due to a volcanic eruption as well as a fake story about him surviving due to his "superior grace and agility".

It is later revealed by Etta that Wild Arms' life was nearly cut short during the eruption of the Fire Mountain, as he narrowly escaping death due to the involvement of Bron; though this rescue was ultimately what put Bron's life on the line. After Bron is rescued, he, alongside Etta, Grandpa, Topps, and the Gang of Seven, head back to the Great Valley as the sun sets.

Reception[]

Wild Arms received a mixed reception from long-time Land Before Time fans. Some found his bumbling antics to be charming and funny, while others saw the character as annoying and unlikable. In terms of his physical appearance as well as his comic relief role in the film, Wild Arms is often compared to the Yellowbellies and Guido.[3]

Trivia[]

  • Wild Arms is similar in color scheme to Guido, a Microraptor character who appears in The Land Before Time XII: The Great Day of the Flyers and the television series.
  • As "Wild Arms" appears to be a nickname given to the character by the other members of the herd due to his antics, alongside his tendency to flail his arms, it is unknown if Wild Arms has another name, and if so, what that name is. It is also possible that this is the name of his species within the Land Before Time universe.
